A 16 year old female presents with history of chronic headaches for the last several months.  The headaches often occur early in the morning.  The headaches are unilateral and last the entire day.  She experiences 2-3 headaches each month, and she feels too debilitated to attend school on those days.

Thirty minutes before the onset of her headaches, the patient experiences a defect in her vision that she describes as "a flashing jagged line that starts in the middle and gradually moves to the left side of my vision."  As her visual symptoms subside, the patient develops a deep, dull headache that gradually increases in intensity.  At its most intense, the headache has a throbbing quality.  With the headache, the patient also experiences nausea and cannot tolerate loud noises or bright lights.

Past medical history is unremarkable, and there is no prior surgery.
